Condors Weekly: Bakersfield Clinches First-Ever Division Title

BAKERSFIELD, Calif." The Bakersfield Condors claimed the Pacific Division title in the final weekend of the regular season. It's the first time the Condors have captured a division title in the team's 12-year history. By clinching the Pacific Division, the Condors earn the #2 seed and home ice advantage through the first two rounds of the National Conference for the 2010 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Bakersfield plays the Victoria Salmon Kings in the best-of-five opening round of the playoffs.

Stockton 6 vs. CONDORS 4

Attn: 4,491

Rookie LW Dan Kissel opened the scoring just a 1:00 into the game, but Stockton rallied to take a 3-1 lead after one period and 5-2 lead after 40 minutes. The Condors made it close mid-way through the third, cutting it to a 5-4 game, but Stockton held on for a 6-4 win. D Eric Regan registered a goal, two assists and a fighting major. With the loss, the Condors held a share of the Pacific Division lead with Stockton for the first time since Nov. 10.

Wednesday, Mar. 31

Condors 5 at STOCKTON 4

The Condors bounced back against the Thunder in a big way. F Gino Guyer, LW Dan Kissel, F Jean-Marc-Beaudoin and F Stephane Goulet staked Bakersfield to a 4-0 advantage. Stockton made it interesting late in the third to cut it to 5-4, but the Condors held on to reclaim sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. Kissel registered a goal in his fourth straight game, while Beaudoin recorded his first professional goal in just his second game.

Friday, Apr. 2

CONDORS 2 vs. Idaho 1

Attn: 6,103

With the Pacific Division title into their sights, the Condors did not disappoint against Idaho, the league's best team in the regular season. RWRyan Menei put Bakersfield on the board in the first and F Jean-Marc Beaudoin tallied the game-winner in the third for a 2-1 Condors victory. G Timo Pielmeier stopped 17 shots for the win.

Saturday, Apr. 3

CONDORS 2 vs. Idaho 1, OT

Attn: 6,278

Despite Bakersfield and Idaho locked in their playoff positions, both teams played hard in an entertaining conclusion to the regular season. LW Dan Kissel tallied his seventh goal, in his 11th professional game, and D Sasha Pokulok netted the game-winner in overtime on the power play for a 2-1 final. G Timo Pielmeier earned the win with 21 saves.

PLAYER AND TEAM NOTES:

* The Condors broke a team record by recording 25 home wins.

* Bakersfield finished a perfect 7-0 at home in overtime and in the shootout. Their .688 percentage in the extra frame ranked first in the ECHL

* G Timo Pielmeier ranked first among rookies and second overall with 27 wins. His 27 wins are tied for fourth most in a single season by a Condor and tied for second among Condors rookies all-time. His 57 games played ranks first in Condors history and his 3,251 minutes played ranks second.

* F Andrew Ianiero had his Condors record of consecutive games played streak snapped at 215 when he sat the final game.

* D Eric Regan finished with 16g-34a-50pts, becoming just the third Condors defenseman to record 50 points. Regan was also named 1st Team All ECHL last week, and finished second among ECHL defensemen in scoring.

* F Stephane Goulet finished tied for 12th in the ECHL in points with 69 (29g-40a) in 68 games.

* C MacGregor Sharp, G J.P. Levasseur, D Stu Bickel and LW Kyle Calder have been reassigned by Anaheim to the Condors to begin the postseason. The playoff roster will be announced on Tuesday

* Bakersfield finished 6th in the ECHL in attendance, with 189,527 fans enjoying a Condors game in the regular season.

2010 Kelly Cup Playoff Picture: The #2 seed Bakersfield Condors meet the #7 seed Victoria Salmon Kings in the National Conference Quarterfinals. The first round is a best-of-five format with the first two games being played in Victoria and games 3-5 in Bakersfield. The Condors went 6-4-0-1 against Victoria this season. This is the second time Bakersfield and Victoria will meet in the postseason. The Salmon Kings defeated the Condors four games to two in the National Conference Quarterfinals in 2008. The winner of the Bakersfield/Victoria series will face the winner of the Alaska/Stockton series. The two other playoff series are as follows with Idaho receiving a first-round bye.

ON THE DOCKET:

The Condors and Salmon Kings open up their series on Wednesday in Victoria for Game 1, and Thursday for Game 2. The series shifts to Bakersfield for Game 3 on Saturday, Apr. 10. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, will take place on Sunday and Monday, Apr. 11 and 12. The Condors get started with the Red Riot in the playoffs on Saturday night, encouraging fans to wear red to the game, and will hand out red Rally Towels to everyone in attendance, sponsored by ABC23, Goodwill Industries and Cal Water. In addition, red-clad Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man will be in the house as well to meet fans and pose in the Condors photo booth on Saturday.
