Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â Mike Barrie scored the first Condors hat trick of the season and 162 minutes in penalties were handed out as Bakersfield defeated the Alaska Aces 7-4 in front of 4,583 fans at Centennial Garden on Friday night.
The Condors came out scrapping, looking to break their four-game winless skid, and took the lead with an early goal by Johan Astrom. His team-leading 16th goal trickled through starter Dan Murphy for the 1-0 lead. The Aces tied the game a few minutes later on the power play, but it wouldn't last. Paul Rosebush notched his eighth of the year at 10:49 to regain the lead. The fisticuffs picked up seconds later, with the Condors Paul Willett receiving the first of five ejections in the game. Andrew Ianiero scored a power play goal at 13:16 to make it 3-1.
It was at 15:52 of the first period when the tempers reached boiling point. A swarm of players gathered in some pushing and shoving near the Aces bench led to a fracas that ended the first period prematurely. Both benches cleared at one point, disappearing under the tunnels momentarily, only to return with nothing further occurring. Over 70 minutes were handed out when the dust had settled, and the remaining 4:08 was tacked onto the second period.
The Condors scored on their first two shots in the second frame, both on Lance Mayes, who replaced Murphy in the Aces net. Ianiero notched his second of the game and Mike Barrie scored his first as a Condor to make it 5-1. Alaska trimmed the lead with another power play goal at 14:24 to leave the score 5-2 after 40 minutes.
With the Condors down to just four defensemen, they tired in the third. While the Aces pounded the Condors net with 14 shots, it was Barrie that sealed the win, scoring two more times on a pair of breakaways just 1:16 apart for a 7-2 cushion. The Aces added a late pair to make it 7-4 for the final tally. Shane Bendera was strong in the net stopping 35 shots (16 in the second period alone) for his second win with the Condors.
