Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (22-12-7) crushed the Roanoke Express (20-17-2) in front of 7,836 at TECO Arena Saturday night. That is a new team record for attendance at an Everblades game.
Florida's offense did not disappoint the packed arena on this night as the Everblades exploded for four goals in the opening period. Forward Carl Mallette would get the scoring starting just over a minute into the game when he gathered a rebounded and slipped it past Roanoke goaltender David Belitski. Six and a half minutes later Mallette lit the lamp again on the power play tipping home Jay Legault's shot from the point for his second goal of the night and Florida led 2-0. The onslaught continued on the power play again when Damien Surma streaked down the right wing and lifted a shot over Belitski and Florida was in control 3-0. Chris Thompson, who joined the Everblades on Wednesday, followed up his three point night Friday night by adding one more goal before the end of the period and Florida was on top 4-0 after one period.
In the second period Gray Shaneberger put the Everblades up 5-0 after sending a backhander past netminder Jason Wolfe who started the second period after Belitski was benched. Roanoke finally broke through eight minutes into the second period when Joe Dusbabek converted a pass from teammate Andrew McPherson to make it 5-1 through two periods.
Roanoke closed to within 5-2 after Kevin Bergin smacked a loose puck out of the air. Florida added an insurance goal by Brian McCullough also in the third period to increase the lead to 6-2.
Maund stopped 29 of 31 shots. Belitski stopped 5 of 9 shots. Wolfe came on in relief and stopped 27 of 29 shots. Florida finished 2 for 7 on the power play while Roanoke went 1 for 5.
The Everblades hit the road for three games next week beginning on Friday January 23rd at Pensacola. Florida will take on Pensacola Saturday January 24th . The puck drops at 8:05 for both games at Pensacola. The Everblades wrap up the three game road trip in Lousiana on Sunday January 25th. Face off is at 4:05.
