Condors sign speedy Slonina
February 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
The Bakersfield Condors have signed C Steve Slonina today, as announced by Head Coach Marty Raymond. Slonina is expected to be in the lineup tonight as the Condors play host to the Victoria Salmon Kings. Game time is 7 p.m.
Slonina, 26, started this season with Mississippi in the Central Hockey League, where he recorded seven points (4g-3a) in 36 games. The fifth-year pro has twice scored 20 goals in the ECHL, including his rookie season in 2003-04 with the Gwinnett Gladiators. After that season his rights were acquired by the Condors in exchange for future considerations. Those rights were traded to Toledo in exchange for Ty Hennes during the 2004-05 campaign without him ever skating in a Condors uniform.
The 5-11, 190-lb. center played four seasons from 1999-2003 with UMass-Lowell, where he finished second in assists and points his senior season. After completing his final year of collegiate hockey, in 2002- 03, he turned pro, skating in two games with the Lowell Lock Monsters in the American Hockey League. In 299 career professional games, the Abington, Massachusetts native has 67 goals, 74 assists, 141 points and 249 penalty minutes.
"We need a guy like Steve with his speed," said Raymond. "He can kill penalties and play a little on the power play, plus he's a center and he can also play 'D', so he's an all-around good player, and he is a good guy in the locker room."
In other transactions today, the Condors added Bakersfield native Manny Martinez as an emergency goaltender. Zach Sikich, who served as emergency goaltender for the last seven days while Yutaka Fukufuji has been on Injured Reserve, was released. The Condors also released D Quinn Fair and traded F Maxime Lincourt to the Elmira Jackals in exchange for future considerations. Fair played three games for the Condors last week, and Lincourt appeared in 15 games for Bakersfield this season, registering three assists.
