Chiefs Ambush The Jackals 9-3
February 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Joey Olson scored three times to lead the Johnstown Chiefs to an 9-3 win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night in front of xxx fans at the Cambria County War Memorial. The nine goals were a season-high given up and matched the Jackals largest margin of defeat this year.
The Chiefs got things going in somewhat of a fluky manner 4:37 into the game as defenseman Michael Knight's shot from the right point was stopped by Jackals' netminder Joel Martin. Martin made the save, but couldn't control the bouncing rebound as teammate Chris Busby stepped in for support. As Martin failed to grab the bounding puck, Busby batted at the puck and accidentally knocked it into his own net.
Chaz Johnson evened the score at 1-1 just twenty-five seconds later when he gobbled up his own rebound and backhanded past Chiefs goaltender Ryan Nie (21 saves). Johnson's 16th of the year was set up by linemates Benoit Doucet and Pierre-Luc Faubert. For Doucet, its was his 32nd assist and 46th points, both team-highs.
Johnstown took the lead for good on the first power play of the night as Tyler Hirsch snapped off a wrister from the left circle that beat Martin on the glove hand side. It took just twenty seconds for the Chiefs to cash in after Matt Gens was sent to the box for tripping at 8:10 and started a barrage of four unanswered goals that took off in the middle period.
Joey Olson got credit for another goal off of a couple of unusual bounces and misplays by the Jackals. Olson finished the play after Martin deflected a Vincent Zaore centering pass in the air. Coming down behind him, Martin and defenseman Luke Fritshaw couldn't find the puck. Ryan Garlock was stopped on the rebound before Olson sent the third rebound into an open net at 2:42.
Olson tipped home his second of the game, making it 4-1, on a tip of a Brian Deeth drive from the high slot at 4:03.
Johnstown closed out the onslaught with 1:56 left in the period with another power play strike and Bobby Robins in the box.
Knight found Nicholas Bachand with a back door feed in the deep slot for an easy redirect to end the second period on a high note for the home club.
Andrew Gallant relieved Martin to start the third, but even a goal seventeen seconds into the final period was not to spark a rally as the final twenty minutes was a track meet that saw Elmira outscored 4-2.
