Condors sign defenseman Kubaliak

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors have signed D Martin Kubaliak (koo-BAH-lee-AK) today, as announced by Head Coach Marty Raymond. Kubaliak has joined the team in Salt Lake City and will suit up in the series against the Utah Grizzlies.

Kubaliak, 22, has skated with three teams in the Central Hockey League this season, totaling seven points (2g-5a) and 72 penalty minutes in 42 games. Last season, his rookie campaign, he played for Huntsville in the Southern Professional Hockey League, recording 22 points (5g-17a) and 143 PIM in 51 contests.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 225-pound blueliner hails from Slovakia, but played two seasons of major junior hockey in North America, suiting up for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League. He also played one season at home with Zvolen in the Slovakian League.

"We got a good, young, strong skater in Martin," Raymond said. "He is a big man on the blueline with a North American hockey mentality - we are very excited to add him to our defensive unit."

D Reagan Leslie was transferred from the 3-day IR to the 7-day IR today, and will be eligible to return on Feb. 19. RW Chris Di Ubaldo was placed on the 3- day IR today, as G Yutaka Fukufuji was activated from the 7-day IR and G Manny Martinez was released as emergency goaltender.

Notes from The Nest:

The Condors face off against the Utah Grizzlies three times in three days, starting tonight at The "E" Center. All three games are slated to start at 6:05 p.m. (Pacific) and can be heard live on KGEO AM1230 and www.bakersfieldcondors.com. The games can also be viewed live online through B2 Networks.

After the Condors three-game series in Utah and an away game against the Las Vegas Wranglers on Monday, they return home for Hockey-Thon Weekend, Feb. 23 and 24. On Saturday, Feb. 23 they host the Stockton Thunder at 7 p.m. The first 2,000 fans, 12- and-under, will receive a Yutaka Fukufuji Bobblehead Doll, courtesy of ABC23 and Carl's Jr.

Saturday's game will be played as part of the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon, a 41-hour hockey marathon organized by former Condor Kevin Barrett, to raise funds for Links for Life, a local breast cancer support organization. The Hockey-Thon will kick off Friday night at 11:59 p.m.

The 41-hour Hockey-Thon wraps up on Sunday, Feb. 24, as the Condors host the Fresno Falcons for a 2 p.m. matinee, sponsored by Bright House Networks, KUZZ 107.9 and Hudson Custom Construction. Prior to the game, Condors and Falcons Alumni will square off in a charity match at noon. Doors will open at 11:45 a.m. that day.

Individual game tickets are on sale and may be purchased through Rabobank Arena Box Office, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday with extended hours on game days.
