
Condors come from behind for 7-6 shootout win

SALT LAKE CITY - The Condors came from two goals down in the third period to take a 7-6 shootout win over the Utah Grizzlies Thursday night, in front of 2,678 fans at the E Center.
Utah (26-20-5, 57 points) got on the board first, second and third, scoring three times in the first nine minutes of the game. The Condors (15-24-9, 39 points) didn't give up, however, and got on the board with LW Mark Derlago potting his 26th of the season at 12:53. Five minutes and two F Andrew Ianiero tallies later, the game was tied at 3-3. Shots were 15-10 Utah in the first period.
The Grizzlies put two more goals past G Yutaka Fukufuji in the second stanza. Johnson netted his second of the night and Garrett Bembridge scored as well. Bakersfield countered with a goal by F Tim Konsorada at 13:53 to make it 5-4 after 40 minutes. 16 power plays had been handed out through just two frames.
Early in the third Utah extended the lead, with Johnson netting his third of the game at 1:15. Bakersfield cut into the lead on the power play, their third power play marker of the night, the goal by LW Todd Griffith to make it 6-5 Utah. The Condors tied it up with just 10.8 seconds left in regulation, with the goaltender pulled and on the power play. Derlago potted his second of the night to send it to overtime.
In overtime, neither team could score, but Bakersfield put four home in the shootout and Fukufuji stopped two of four Grizzlies for his eighth win of the season.
Notes from The Nest:Recently signed D Martin Kubaliak made his Condors debut tonight... Derlago's first period tally tied the Condors rookie record for goals at 26, set by Todd Griffith just last season. He established a new rookie record with the game-tying goal.
The Condors face off against the Utah Grizzlies two more times this week at The "E" Center, on Friday and Saturday. Both games are slated to start at 6:05 p.m. (Pacific) and can be heard live on KGEO AM1230 and www.bakersfieldcondors.com. The games can also be viewed live online through B2 Networks.
After the Condors series in Utah and an away game against the Las Vegas Wranglers on Monday, they return home for the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon Weekend, Feb. 23 and 24. On Saturday, Feb. 23 they host the Stockton Thunder at 7 p.m. The first 2,000 fans, 12- and-under, will receive a Yutaka Fukufuji Bobblehead Doll, courtesy of ABC23 and Carl's Jr.
Saturday's game will be played as part of the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon, a 41-hour hockey marathon organized by former Condor Kevin Barrett, to raise funds for Links for Life, a local breast cancer support organization. The Hockey-Thon will kick off Friday night at 11:59 p.m.
The 41-hour Hockey-Thon wraps up on Sunday, Feb. 24, as the Condors host the Fresno Falcons for a 2 p.m. matinee, sponsored by Bright House Networks, KUZZ 107.9 and Hudson Custom Construction. Prior to the game, Condors and Falcons Alumni will square off in a charity match at noon. Doors will open at 11:45 a.m. that day.
Individual game tickets are on sale and may be purchased through Rabobank Arena Box Office, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday with extended hours on game days. Tickets may also be purchased by phone at 322-2525, online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com, or at any Ticketmaster location.
