Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors came home from Salt Lake City with one win in their three-game trek, leaving them just one point from clinching a Kelly Cup Playoff spot.
With a record of 35-28-4-1 and 75 points, the Condors are on the verge of becoming only the second team in the National Conference to lock down a playoff berth. As only five points separate the 2nd place Condors from the 8th place Ontario Reign, the playoff picture out west remains murky (see standings update below).
The Condors also have a magic number to clinch a Pacific Division title - seven points (gained by Bakersfield or lost by Stockton, who has the potential to gain the most points out of any division opponent).
THIS WEEK (ALL TIMES PACIFIC):
Tuesday, Mar. 30 vs. Stockton, 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Mar. 31 @ Stockton, 7 p.m.
Friday, Apr. 2 vs. Idaho, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Apr. 3 vs. Idaho, 7 p.m.
WEEK IN REVIEW (Home team in CAPS):
Wednesday, Mar. 24
UTAH 7 vs. Condors 4
The Grizzlies scored three times in the first and three in the second, and cruised to a 7-4 win to open the three-game series. F Stephane Goulet scored twice for the Condors, who out-shot Utah 35-27 in the loss. G Jeremie Dupont made his pro debut with Bakersfield, coming into the game in relief of G Timo Pielmeier.
Friday, Mar. 26
Condors 5 vs. UTAH 4, OT
D Sasha Pokulok netted the game-winning goal in overtime, capping two separate third period rallies by Bakersfield. F Andrew Ianiero scored to erase a 3-1 deficit at 10:41 of the third, and rookie LW Dan Kissel potted his second of the night with 1:41 left in regulation to make it 4-4. RW Ryan Menei added a first period goal, while Pokulok (1g-2a) and D Eric Regan (0g-3a) both had three points as well in the win.
Saturday, Mar. 27
UTAH 7 vs. Condors 4
The Grizzlies snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the second period with a three-goal burst, and added two goals in the final 1:05 to take the final game of the season series, 7-4. LW Dan Kissel had 1g-1a in the losing effort, while C Adam Naglich also scored twice for the Condors.
PLAYER AND TEAM NOTES:
* The Condors are just one win shy of tying the team record for home wins (24, set in 2005-06). They have three home games remaining this week.
* G Timo Pielmeier has played 3,009 minutes this season, the 4th-highest single season total in Bakersfield history.
* With his assist on Saturday, F Andrew Ianiero passed Jamie Cooke for 2nd on the all-time Condors points list, with 314. The mark is 4th in Bakersfield history, which also includes Steve Dowhy, who scored the bulk of his points with the Fog.
* LW Dan Kissel had back-to-back two-point games on Friday and Saturday (3g-1a), and now has five points (4g-1a) in seven pro games.
* F Stephane Goulet is three goals shy of being the 11th Condor in team history to reach 30 goals in a single season.
* Last Friday night, Pielmeier became the first Condors goaltender to record a multiple-point game (2a). His four points (1g-3a) is a Condors single season and career record, and sits four points shy of the all-time Bakersfield career mark (Lee Schill, 0g-8a for the Fog).
* Friday was the fifth OT win of the season, one shy of the Condors record set in 2005-06.
Magic Numbers
Idaho has clinched the top spot in the National Conference and a first-round bye in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Pacific Division winner will take the 2nd seed and play the 7th place finisher, and the 8th place team will not make the playoffs. The first round is a best-of-five.
One point for the Condors, or one point the last place Ontario Reign fail to gain, will put the Condors in the postseason. The Condors magic number is seven to clinch the Pacific Division.
