Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Connor James scored twice and added an assist as the Bakersfield Condors moved to 4-0 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the Alaska Aces on Tuesday night in front of 3,217 fans at Centennial Garden.
With NHL All-Star Scott Gomez in the lineup for Alaska, James decided to steal the show and set up the first tally of the night late on a first period power play. His shot rebounded into the slot where Condors newcomer Dennis Shiryaev pounced on it and lit the lamp for a goal in his Condors debut. Paul Rosebush made it 2-0 later in the frame with his first of the season on a centering feed from Mike Hofstrand.
Alaska closed the gap to 2-1 early in the second with a tally from Cal Benazic just 3:22 into the period. Vlad Serov's jaw-dropping backhanded goal just a minute and a half later brought the crowd to their feet and regained momentum for Bakersfield. James put the game out of reach with two goals of his own later in the period, the last of which he turned a broken play into a breakaway tally for his third of the season and a 5-1 Condors lead. Chris Minard's goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game made it look closer than it was and Bakersfield cruised to the 5-2 win.
The Condors outshot the Aces 34-25 and goaltender Randy Petruk has backstopped each Condors game of the season, improving to 4-0, tied atop the West Division with idle Idaho.
The Condors will also be in action on Saturday night when the San Diego Gulls come to town. That night, sponsored by KKEY-TV 11, KERN 1410 and SBC Smart Yellow Pages, three historic Condors numbers will be hung in the Garden forever. Paul Willett's #16, Steve Dowhy's #74 and Glen Mears' #26 will be retired to honor their memorable careers in Bakersfield. Everyone in attendance will receive a special poster to help commemorate the night as well.
