Steelheads acquire defenseman Zion

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads announced today it has acquired defenseman Jonathan Zion in a trade for cash with the Bakersfield Condors. In addition, the Steelheads' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Utah Grizzlies assigned Zion to Idaho's roster. Bakersfield owned the ECHL rights to the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Zion, while Utah owns his AHL rights. He is currently on a two-way contract with the AHL and ECHL.

Zion was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in round 4, 110th overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. The 23-year-old has played for several teams in the ECHL and AHL, but began his career with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's where he was a teammate of Lance Galbraith. Together they won the Memorial Cup in 1999-00.

Zion is expected to dress for this weekend's games when the Steelheads will host the expansion Victoria Salmon Kings. The puck drops for both the Friday and Saturday games at 7:10 p.m. Friday night the Steelheads will give away a DVD - "A Season to Remember" to all Season Ticket holders and the first one-thousand fans through the doors (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). The DVD recaps some of the highlights of the Steelheads'championship 2003-04 season, as well as full Game 5 coverage of the Kelly Cup Finals.
