Condors Deal with Aces
January 8, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League completed a trade this afternoon with the Anchorage Aces. The Condors sent rookie winger/defenseman Peter McRae to the Aces in exchange for winger J.J. Wrobel and defenseman Mike Marostega.
Wrobel, 26, is currently in his third professional season, and has 4g-10a-14pts in 25 games thus far with the Aces. He is coming off his best season in 2001-02, which saw him light the lamp 27 times and add 36 assists for 63 points in 66 games. He split his rookie season between the United Hockey League and the Aces.
Marostega, 24, has played in parts of four pro seasons, with 116 games under his belt. This season, he has appeared in 32 games, scoring once and adding 10 assists. He spent four seasons at Colgate University before turning pro at the end of the 1999-2000 season.
McRae appeared in 20 games with Bakersfield, compiling a pair of assists and 20 minutes in penalties. He spent most of his time at forward, but played on defense as well. The deal also fulfills the trade between the two clubs dating back to last season, which sent Sasha Lakovic to Anchorage for future considerations.
The Condors have a roster spot open, as defenseman Jimmy Drolet has left the team to play in Europe. Drolet was third in the league in scoring among blueliners with 18 points, and was tied for the team lead with a +11.
"Peter's been a good soldier for us and we're sad to let him go," said Head Coach Paul Kelly. "But this deal was presented to us and we couldn't pass it up. J.J. is a guy that we think can help us out with some goal scoring, and Mike has some experience and can add to our depth on defense.
"We hate to lose Jimmy," he continued, regarding Drolet. "We knew there was a chance of him going over there (to Europe) when he came here and we're disappointed that he's leaving us. He's a classy kid and we wish him well."
Bakersfield hosts a pair of games this weekend, starting with Fresno on Friday night at Centennial Garden. The first 2,000 children 12 and under will receive a Condors three-ring notebook, sponsored by Spanish Radio Group and American Business Machines.
