
Condors charge back but fall in OT, 5-4

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Bakersfield Condors came charging back from an early three-goal deficit to force overtime, but fell in the extra session, 5-4, to the Phoenix RoadRunners before 4,501 fans at U.S. Airways Center Saturday night.
The RoadRunners (15-16-3, 33 pts) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, before F Andrew Ianiero got Bakersfield (12-21-5, 29pts) on the board with a power play goal at 19:07 in the opening frame. However, Phoenix responded with another tally with just eight seconds left in the period to enter the intermission ahead, 4-1.
G Yutaka Fukufuji replaced G Dave McKee in net to start the second period, and Bakersfield began their comeback with a power play goal from D Martin Frechette at 7:55 to make it 4-2. Fukufuji stopped all six shots he faced in the period to keep the Condors within striking distance.
Just over seven minutes into the final period, C Dave Bonk stole the puck from RW Dan DaSilva behind the Condors net, skated it out to the slot and hit a streaking RW Chad Painchaud with a pass in the neutral zone. Painchaud raced ahead and converted on the partial breakaway tp pull the Condors wihin one. Bonk registered the lone assist on the goal, and finished the game with three assists. At 15:22, the Condors found the equalizer, netting their third power play goal of the game when F matt Pope rifled home a one-timer from the bottom of the left face off circle to knot the score at 4-4 and force overtime.
Scoreless for the first 4:51 of the 5-minute extra session, veteran C Kimbi Daniels found the back of the net with a one-timer on the power play, lifting Phoenix to the 5-4 win, with just nine seconds left in overtime. Fukufuji finished with 14 saves on 15 shots in the overtime loss, which gains Bakersfield one point in the standings.
