Condors and KGET Hold 'Support the Troops' Rally

April 8, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors and KGET TV-17 and 970AM will hold a "Support the Troops" rally on the Centennial Garden Plaza prior to Saturday's Game Two playoff matchup against the San Diego Gulls. The event will start at 5:00pm and is expected to last an hour.

The rally is being held to show support to the men and women of Kern County serving overseas in Operation Iraqi Freedom. People are being asked to bring flags and pictures of loved ones who are currently in the service. Corporal Joe Cannon, from the US Marine Corps, will sing the National Anthem for the event, and there will be other patriotic songs as well. An aerial photograph will be taken of the rally and posted on www.kget.com for the troops overseas to view.

In addition, there will be guest speakers, including veterans and individuals from the Marine Corps League, an organization that helps local families of those called to active duty. Speakers also include Gaylen Young from KGET-TV 17 and Jeff Lemucchi and Ralph Bailey from KGET 970AM. There will be a "Support the Troops" T-shirt sale to raise money for the Marine Corps League.

"We want all of the troops to know that they have our support here in Kern County," said Condors President & GM Matthew Riley. "Even though they are a half a world away, they're actions and dedication has a profound effect on us here at home.

"In addition, we'd like to encourage everyone to bring a phone calling card to the games this weekend to donate to the troops from Kern County that are overseas. This will help them speak with their loved ones back home while they're away.

The match against San Diego, following the rally, will be highlighted by a "Jersey Off Our Backs" raffle and auction of the team's "Go Army" warm up jerseys. The Condors wear the "Go Army" jerseys before every match, home and away, during the pre-game warm up. Five of the sweaters will be given away through a raffle, with everyone in attendance eligible to win. After the contest, the auction will be held at center ice, with the proceeds going towards the Active 20/30 Club, and will benefit local children's charities. A minimum of 10% of the proceeds has already been allocated to go specifically to the children of local servicemen and women serving overseas. KGET-TV 17, Clear Channel Radio and the Active 20/30 Club sponsor Round One of the playoffs for the Condors.

The Condors will host Games One and Two of the 2003 Taylor Cup Playoffs against the rival San Diego Gulls on April 11th and 12th. Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden Box Office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Condors office next to Centennial Garden.

Condors droppings: The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Bakersfield is holding a "Fill the Skate" drive on Friday and Saturday. They will be outside of Centennial Garden on Friday night collecting donations, as well as at three stations throughout Bakersfield on Saturday from 10:00am until 2:00pm. They will be on the corner of Rosedale and Coffee, California and Stockdale, and Ming and Oak. Everyone who makes a donation will receive a $2.00 discount voucher for Saturday night's game.
