Condors Acquire Grover from Cyclones for Nie
January 7, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, official ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, announced today they have acquired D Donny Grover from the Cincinnati Cyclones in exchange for G Ryan Nie. The announcement was made by Head Coach Marty Raymond.
Grover, 25, is in his fourth professional season, and had 10 points, all assists, in 31 games with the Cyclones. The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound blueliner has played primarily in the ECHL, with Cincinnati, Reading, Columbia and South Carolina. He also has 18 games of American Hockey League experience with Lowell and Hershey, as well as time in the United Hockey League and the German Bundisliga.
The Boston, Mass., native played four seasons at Northeastern University prior to turning pro. As a rookie with Danbury in the UHL, Grover amassed 41 points (10g-31a) in 66 games, eighth in the league and first on the Trashers among defensemen. That season, Danbury bowed out in the Colonial Cup Finals, and Grover appeared in all 18 playoff games. He was named to the UHL All-Rookie Team and also skated in 10 games in the AHL with the Lowell Lock Monsters. He followed it up with a 32-point (10g-22a) season in 54 games with South Carolina and a second AHL stint.
What Coach Raymond says: "We are at the point where we could no longer carry three goaltenders and had to make a move," said Raymond. "And we feel we've gotten a pretty good player in Donny. Adding him to our blueline is a step in the right direction to improve us defensively."
Nie was 6-6-2 with the Condors, with a 3.31 goals against average and a .901 save percentage in 15 games with the team. The Condors are expecting the reassignment of G Dave McKee from Iowa prior to the weekend.
Bailey recalled to Iowa The Iowa Chops have also recalled RW Jason Bailey today from the Condors. Bailey, 21, is in his rookie season in the pro ranks after playing junior hockey with Ottawa in the Ontario Hockey League as well as college hockey at the University of Michigan. Bailey has appeared in 21 games for the Condors with 26 penalty minutes.
