Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, N.J. (January 7, 2009) -- The Trenton Devils will retire Scott Bertoli's No. 19 jersey in a pre-game ceremony before their game against the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday, February 21. Bertoli ranks first in many of Trenton's all-time statistical categories, including goals (182), assists (344), and points (526). The announcement was made by Trenton Devils General Manager Chris Lamoriello.

Bertoli spent most of his eight-year pro career in Trenton, playing in 507 games for the Titans. Bertoli also played 13 games in the American Hockey League with Lowell, St. John, and Norfolk. He placed among the top two in scoring in each year of his Titans' career.

A graduate of Princeton University, Bertoli played with the Tigers from 1995 until 1999. After playing his final game for the Tigers, Bertoli made the short trip to Trenton to embark on what would become one of the most impressive careers in ECHL history.

In his first season with the Titans, Bertoli led the team in assists (44) and points (65). He also chipped in with nine points (1g, 8a) in 14 games during the Titans' surprise run as an expansion team to the Northern Conference Finals in 2000.

The Titans would follow that run with a berth in the Kelly Cup Finals in 2001, as Bertoli led the team in the postseason with 14 assists and 21 points. They would fall to the Stingrays in the championship round. Bertoli also played in the ECHL's All-Star Game that season, tallying an assist in the contest.

The 2002-03 season for Bertoli would be cut short by injury, yet he managed to finish second in points (21g+38a=59p) despite playing in just 47 games. Bertoli would finish second the following season with 61 points (19g, 42a) in 56 games.

Bertoli's excellence would be defined in the 2004-05 season, when he led a group of veterans to the Trenton's only Kelly Cup Championship. Bertoli led the Titans with 68 points (27g, 41a) in the regular season and 24 points (6g, 18a) in the playoffs. He scored the game-winning goal in game two of Kelly Cup Finals against the Florida Everblades, as the Titans would eventually capture the Kelly Cup in six games.

In 2005-06, Bertoli was named as an ECHL All-Star for the second time, scoring a goal and an assist in the game. He finished the regular season leading the Titans in scoring with 67 points (20g, 47a).

Bertoli may have saved his best for last in the 2006-07 season, notching career highs in goals (31), assists (48), and points (79), while leading the Titans for a fifth and final time in scoring. His 48 assists and 79 points are Trenton records for the most in a season. He was sent off by being named to the ECHL's Second All-Star Team at the conclusion of the season.

Along with being at the top of many categories for Trenton, Bertoli ranks among the leading scorers in ECHL history as well. He is tied for 18th on the ECHL's all-time points list and tied for 14th on the all-time assists list. Bertoli is third for most points with a single team in the ECHL, behind Dave Seitz of South Carolina (587) and John Spoltore of Louisiana (533).

After retiring from professional hockey, Bertoli took a position as the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Coach of the boys' varsity ice hockey team at Princeton Day School, where he currently works today.

The Devils return to the ice on Friday, January 9, for the first of three games in Ohio, as they face the Cincinnati Cyclones. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the free audio broadcast of the game online at www.trentondevils.com.
