Comets Fans Turnout for Tickets
Published on October 9, 2013 under American Hockey League (AHL)
Utica Comets News Release
When individual tickets for Comets home games went on sale this past Saturday, Marcy's Steve Zabko was first in line. It was at 3:30am that the longtime hockey fan began his six and a half hour wait at the Utica Memorial Auditorium's main entrance on Oriskany Street West for choice seating. Within a couple hours, a line began forming.
"I'm here for opening night tickets, and for when Syracuse is here (October 25) ", says Zabko. "I didn't miss any of the Devils games when they played here at The AUD. That was bitter sweet when they left. 20 years later, I didn't want to miss out with the Comets."
Yorkville's Mike Flihan, who tells of in the past, traveling to Syracuse to watch the Crunch in American Hockey League action, echo's Zabko's enthusiasm for having a local team to cheer for now. "When I went to Syracuse for hockey, that was entertainment", Flihan said. "I want opening night tickets, and I'm looking forward to seeing Gordie Howe and the Hanson Brothers." Filhan was second in line arriving at 5:30am.
When doors opened at 10am for ticket sales there were roughly 200 people in line, which stretched into The AUD's parking lot.
Bill Vinci, a Buffalo Sabres fan who is now sharing his hockey allegiance with the Comets, was anxious to have an opportunity to secure ice level/glass seats for the October 23 home opener. "I wasn't at the game in Rome last week but I want to see the team up close against the Devils," Rome's Vinci states.
There seemed to be a calmness, a fan friendly atmosphere shared by those waiting their turn at the box office on Saturday. With many hockey fans having waited a couple decades for the AHL's return to Utica, minutes more in line didn't seem a bother.
