Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME - The Portland Pirates will open their 2013-14 season on Wednesday night when they begin their VIP Cup defense against the Manchester Monarchs. Puck drop is set for 7 PM at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston for the first of 12 VIP Cup Series games this season, presented by VIP Tires & Service. The 2013-14 season is presented by Dunkin' Donuts.
The Pirates will open the season at home for the first time since 2010, when they defeated the Monarchs by a 6-5 score. This will be the second straight year that the Pirates' home opener will take place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, where they were 5-1 last season. The Pirates look to win their opening game for the first time since 2011 as they look to improve on their 2012-13 successes.
Manchester opened their season on the road against Springfield with a 3-2 shootout defeat against the Falcons. Jordan Weal and Tyler Toffoli scored for the Monarchs, while Martin Jones made 30 saves for Manchester. However, the Monarchs were stymied in all five shootout rounds, allowing Springfield's Broc Little to score the Falcon's game winner in the 4th shootout round. Manchester was whistled for 7 penalties on the night, but were perfect on the penalty kill.
The Pirates had a 7-5 record against the Monarchs last season, defeating them for the first ever VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires & Service. During last season's VIP Cup Season, the Pirates and Monarchs played once at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on December 14th, where the Pirates defeated Manchester 4-2 with three former Pirates (Chris Brown, David Rundblad, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson) and one current Pirate (Brett Hextall) providing the offense in the victory. The Pirates and Monarchs last faced off on April 5th, with Phil Lane scoring twice to secure a 4-2 Pirates victory and clinch the VIP Cup.
Tonight's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship station WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 and WTME AM 780/1450 in the Lewiston/Auburn area. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking "Listen Live" and AHL Live. The pregame show starts at 6:40 with Jeff Mannix. Tickets are still available by calling the Androscoggin Bank Colisee box office at (207) 783-2009 ext. 525 or online at thecolisee.com.
