Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, KY-The word quit is certainly not a part of the Florence Freedom's(47-38) vocabulary as they came back for a third straight night to beat an opponent. Tuesday, the Freedom trailed 3-1 going into the 9th, as they pulled out a 4-3 series opening win against the Joliet Slammers(35-50). It was the Freedom's ninth win this season when trailing after the 5th inning. The Freedom are now just 1.5 games back of the final wild card spot with eleven games to play.
With the Freedom trailing 3-0 going into the 7th, Eddie Rodriguez provided the Freedom a spark yet again. Rodriguez drilled a hanging breaking ball over the left field wall with two outs to break up the shutout by Joliet starter Steven Maxwell. The homerun was Rodriguez's 10th of the season and it also marked the third straight game in which he homered in.
The Freedom trailed 3-1 heading into the 9th as Maxwell was left in the game. David Harris started the late comeback bid as he led off the inning with a solo homerun to right center. Harris homered for the 10th time this season to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Maxwell was pulled after that going 8 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs. He also struck out 8 earning a no decision. Geoff Brown was summoned out of the Slammers bullpen. He walked Junior Arrojo who later stole his 26th base of the season to get in scoring position for Rodriguez. With one out, Rodriguez blooped an RBI single over a leaping second baseman Abel Nieves as Arrojo scored to tie the game at 3-3. After a walk to Drew Rundle, Chase Doremus was brought in. He intentionally walked John Malloy to load the bases. With two outs and the bases loaded, Stephen Cardullo bounced a game winning RBI single back through the middle scoring Rodriguez from third giving the Freedom a 4-3 win. It was the Freedom's fourth walk off victory of the season.
Matt Kline(1-3) collected the win, his first of the season as he struck out pinch hitter Erik Lis in the 9th the only batter he faced. Greg Brown(1-3) took the loss. The Freedom got a quality start from Andres Caceres as he went 7 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs while matching his season high in strikeouts with 6.
The Freedom and Slammers continue their three game series Wednesday night. Joliet will feature RHP Jacob Sanchez(4-1, 1.93) as the Freedom will counter with RHP Andy Clark(1-1, 1.39). The game can be heard starting at 6:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
