(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - When Andrew Werner throws his first pitch as a San Diego Padre later today, he will become only the second Evansville Otter to appear in a Major League game.

Prior to this afternoon, pitcher George Sherrill was the only other Evansville Otter to reach the Major Leagues in the 18-year history of the franchise.

Werner will be the starting pitcher today for San Diego when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It has been a long, impressive journey for the left-hander since he began his professional career with Evansville in 2009.

Werner went 2-3 in his rookie season, before beginning his next season with the Otters and finishing that year with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League.

The pitcher was signed in 2011 by the Padres organization where he played with Fort Wayne (Class-A) and Lake Elsinore (Class-A+). Werner kept advancing to the point where he played with San Antonio (Class-AA) and Tucson (Class -AAA) this year, before being called up.

"Andrew's rapid promotion through the Padres' organization says a lot about the quality of players in the Frontier League," says Otters owner Bill Bussing. "Two years ago, he was pitching for us. Now he's starting a major league game."

First pitch is set for 3:35 p.m. PDT at Petco Park in San Diego, California.
