Omaha Lancers News Release
Urbandale, IA - Trailing 5-1 in the second period, the Omaha Lancers stormed back with three-straight, however, couldn't complete the comeback in a 6-4 loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday night.
Des Moines got on the board just 1:29 into the game. Georgy Gorodetsky stood to the right of the net and sent a pass from below the goal line on to the stick of Van Barr. Barr accepted the pass and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Lancers netminder Zack Skog for the 1-0 lead.
Omaha responded during the power play on a scrum in front of the net. After a few chances that were denied by Buccaneers goaltender Jan Ruzicka, Matt Meier had the final touch. Meier tracked down the loose puck and punched it into the net, tying the game, 1-1, at 5:03 of the first period with his fourth of the year.
As the period was winding down, Des Moines regained their one-goal lead. After a save by Jan Ruzicka, Kenneth Hausinger moved in with David Keefer on a two-on-one rush back the other way. Hausinger sent a pass through the hash marks to Keefer who fired the puck under a diving Zack Skog to give the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. The goal came with just 2:13 left in the opening frame and was Keefer's fourth of the season.
Des Moines started out flying in the second period, scoring three-straight goals. The first came on the power play and David Keefer recorded his second of the night to give the Buccaneers a 3-1 advantage at the 6:34 mark. Shortly after, Des Moines increased their lead off the stick of Zach Jordan. He moved quickly down the right side and sent a wrist shot by Zack Skog for the 4-1 lead. Following the goal, Peter Thome replaced Skog in net.
After the goaltending change, Georgy Gorodetsky put the Buccaneers up 5-1 at 8:31 of the second period on his fifth of the year. However, after the Lancers took their only timeout of the game, Austin Alger started the comeback with his sixth of the season. Alger's goal came at 8:45 of the second period to pull Omaha within three goals and had an assist from Nathan Krusko.
Omaha scored two goals in the final six minutes of regulation to make it a game. Matt Meier tallied his second of the game at 14:26 with an assist from Ben Lown, his first USHL point in his first game. The goal by Meier pulled the Lancers two goals away from tying the game. Then, JC MacLean put in his third of the year and the Lancers all of a sudden were down just one goal with just 2:03 left in the game.
After Omaha pulled Peter Thome for the extra-attacker, David Keefer fired the puck in for the hat trick and a 6-4 win for the Buccaneers.
The Lancers are back home at Ralston Arena tomorrow night against the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 p.m. Come meet Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and Elves. Can't make it?
