December 18, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm is pairing with Sammy's Superheroes Foundation, a Nebraska-based pediatric cancer organization, to help raise awareness and funds in the fight against childhood cancer.
The Storm will take part in a Sammy's Superheroes event, sponsored by First National Bank, with players on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., outside of the First National Bank in Columbus, NE, to help raise money for the organization.
On Friday, January 22 at the Viaero Center, the Storm hosts the Dubuque Fighting Saints on "Sammy's Superheroes Night", presented by First National Bank. Tri-City will don specialty jerseys featuring the Sammy's Superheroes Logo and give six children affected by cancer the chance to live the "gameday" experience with the Storm.
"It feels like we are becoming a part of the family," said Jenn Brown, Office Manager for the Sammy's Superheroes Foundation. "We are excited to pair with the Storm to help fight pediatric cancer."
The organization, founded August 2012, was founded after Sammy Nahorny was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a solid tumor of the adrenal system. The organization seeks to raise awareness of childhood cancer and donates funds to pediatric cancer research organizations.
During the game on January 22, as part of the gameday experience, Storm players will interact with six children affected by cancer before the game and skate out on the ice before the game starts.
"This organization about more than just Sammy," said Brown. "These kids have been through a lot and it's about making sure others realize the battle so many of them are fighting."
After the game, the Sammy's Superheroes Jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to Sammy's Superheroes. In addition, the Storm has announced a partnership with Sammy's Superheroes to sell a line of Storm and Sammy's t-shirts to raise money for the organization.
The Storm's engagement with the Sammy's Superheroes Foundation is part of the team's effort to help different organizations tackle cancer. Earlier this season, Tri-City hosted Color Out Cancer Night at the Viaero Center. The Storm raised more than $2,000 in November and December for the American Cancer Society.
Last season, the Jerseys for a Cause Program raised $12,197. The Storm partnered with Team Jack, another organization dedicated to fighting pediatric cancer, for Team Jack Night last season, raising more than $16,000 through t-shirt sales, silent auction and Jerseys for a Cause.
"We have a responsibility to do what we can to fight cancer." said Dana Wright, Vice President of Business Operations for the Tri-City Storm. "Sammy's Superheroes is a tremendous organization and it's such a wonderful cause to help them."
