Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Frederick nearly blew a six-run lead, but was able hold off the Dash for an 8-6 win on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Keys earned a split of the four-game series and Winston-Salem finished its home stand with a 4-3 record.
Frederick (21-21, 62-50) scored in the second inning thanks to a two-out rally against Dash starter Nate Jones. With two down, Pedro Florimon walked and Bobby Stevens was hit by a pitch. Luis Bernardo brought home Florimon with a single to right field to make it 1-0 Keys.
The visitors plated two more in the third inning off Jones (8-5). Kyle Hudson walked and Ronnie Welty doubled to lead off the inning. Miguel Abreu grounded a ball off shortstop Greg Paiml's glove for an error, scoring Hudson. Welty scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to put Frederick on top by three.
Winston-Salem (21-21, 64-48) got its first run in the fourth after Oliver Drake faced only one batter over the minimum through three innings. Ozzie Lewis hit an RBI single to score Drew Garcia to cut the Dash's deficit to two runs.
The Keys scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to inflate their lead to six. Garrett Johnson surrendered a two-run homer to Bernardo, an RBI double to L.J. Hoes, and a sacrifice fly to Florimon to make it 7-1 Frederick.
The Dash rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to get back into the contest. Drake allowed a walk and two singles to start the frame and was relieved by Brett Jacobson after loading the bases. Luis Sierra greeted Jacobson with a single to bring home one run and re-load the bases. After Kenny Williams, Jr. and Greg Paiml struck out, Brandon Short walked to make it 7-3 Frederick, bringing the tying run to the plate.
Garcia was the next batter and got ahead in the count 2-0 against Jacobson. He then laced a single to right field, bringing home two runs. Welty's throw from right field skipped past the catcher, allowing Short to score on the error. Garcia, however, was caught in a rundown between second and third base and was tagged out by Miguel Abreu to end the inning. After trailing by six, the Dash had cut it to a 7-6 deficit with two innings to play.
Brandon Kloess pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Winston and Jon Gilmore reached on an error to start the bottom half. Left-hander Brett Bordes then came in to face Seth Loman, who bounced into a 3-6-1 double play to clear the bases. John Mariotti relieved Bordes and retired Lewis on a groundout to end the inning.
They Keys scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth to go ahead by two. The cushion was enough for Mariotti, who pitched a perfect frame in the bottom of the ninth for his third save.
Drake (3-6) picked up the win, giving up four runs on five hits in six-plus innings. Jones took the loss after allowing three runs in five innings.
Winston-Salem next hits the road for a seven-game trip beginning on Monday night at Wilmington. LHP Joe Serafin (1-2, 7.36) matches up against LHP Will Smith (1-1, 4.15) at 7:05 p.m. Fans can tune into the game beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
