
Bernardo Belts Frederick to 8-6 Win

In the series finale of the four-game set in Winston-Salem, the Keys prevailed with a two-run victory, 8-6. Frederick dominated most of the game but ran into a heap of trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Dash plated five runs in the inning to cut their deficit to just one run. The Keys closed the door, however, in the final two innings as they improved to 21-21 in the second half of the season.
Entering Sunday afternoon, RHP Oliver Drake was winless in last eight starts with his last win coming on June 17 at Winston-Salem. Drake, who entered with a 10.80 in the first inning this year, got off to a great start as he struck out the side in the first. Drake finished his outing with four strikeouts.
Frederick struck first when C Luis Bernardo singled home Pedro Florimon from second base. The Keys scored two more runs on RHP Nate Jones in the third to push their lead to 3-0.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the fourth to Winston-Salem, Luis Bernardo crushed a two-run shot to leftfield to give Frederick a 5-1 lead. Bernardo had his first multi-hit game of the season on Sunday as well as driving in a season-high three RBI.
The Keys scored plated two more runs in the top of the seventh they ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Winston-Salem scored two runs and had the bases loaded when 2B Drew Garcia stepped to the plate. Garcia drove the Brett Jacobson pitch into rightfield. With one run already home on the play, RF Ronnie Welty fired home but his throw got away from C Luis Bernardo and two more runs to cut their deficit to just one run.
Frederick scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single by Pedro Florimon as they escaped with the 8-6 win. Oliver Drake improved to 3-6 on the year while RHP John Mariotti picked up his third save of the year. Mariotti tossed a perfect 1.1 innings to close out the win. Nate Jones fell to 8-5 in the Winston-Salem loss.
RHP Zach Clark (1-1, 6.60) will start Monday evening in Myrtle Beach, SC. Game one of the four-game series between the Pelicans and Keys is set for 7:05 p.m. from BB&T Coastal Field. Coverage will begin at 6:45 with the UPS Store Pregame show on the Frederick Keys Baseball Network.
