Potomac Nationals News Release
(MYRTLE BEACH, SC)The Potomac Nationals wrapped up a season-altering road trip with a 4-3 win in Myrtle Beach Sunday night. The victory was the Nationals' fifth in sixth completed games on a road trip that vaulted them into first place.
A four-run fourth inning that predictably involved Tyler Moore would be all the offense the Nats would need. Brett Oberholtzer had retired Potomac in order the first time through, but Steve Lombardozzi ripped the first pitch of the fourth into left field for the Nats' first hit. Oberholtzer then issued a costly walk to Dan Lyons. Michael Burgess stroked a single to right field to score Lombardozzi and register his 66th RBI; Burgess was caught in a run down between first and second for the inning's first out.
Up stepped Tyler Moore, and an epic battle ensued. On the eleventh pitched, Moore hit a bouncing ball into center to tie the game at two. It was his league-leading 83rd RBI, and set a new milestone for Potomac. Moore has now hit safely in twelve straight games, a new season high (Lombardozzi had the previous mark of 11).
With two outs and Moore at first, Sean Rooney crushed a ball to right-center field that brought the first baseman home. Samuel Sime's throw to Dan Nelson at third skipped out of play and Rooney was awarded home plate to make it 4-2.
Pat Lehman and Cory Van Allen kept the Pelicans off the board with five combined scoreless innings. VanAllen struck out four in two frames.
Myrtle Beach got one back in the ninth. Matt Kennelly singled on the infield to open the inning and moved to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a Justin Phillabaum wild pitch and scored when Mycal Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center. But Cory Harrilchak lined out to Moresi in center and Phillabaum had his first save.
Wilmington stormed back in Salem, so the Nats head into Monday leading the second half by 1.5 games.
The Nationals and Lynchburg Hillcats will resume Wednesday's suspended game at 5:00 in Woodbridge. Marcos Frias takes the ball for the Nationals. It is a Dollar Monday presented by the Washington Post, so call 703-590-2311 to get your tickets now and Join the Party!
