Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Hillcats topped the Indians 8-3 on Sunday afternoon to take three out of four games from Kinston at Grainger Stadium. Kyle Day hit his second grand slam of the season at Kinston to propel Lynchburg to the series finale win.
Lynchburg jumped on Kinston with a four-run first inning to take a 4-0 lead. After starter Joey Mahalic walked the bases loaded, Kyle Day smacked a grand slam over the wall in right field. It was Day's second grand slam of the season and both of them have been at Grainger Stadium.
Kinston plated a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Cats lead in half at 4-2. Kyle Bellows brought in the first run with an RBI ground out and the other run was driven in on the RBI single by Juan Diaz.
The Hillcats opened the game up in the top of the seventh inning with another four-run frame. The inning started with five straight hits. Shane Carlson, Kevin Coddington and Brodie Greene all singled in a run in the inning that extended the Lynchburg lead to 8-2. The Indians did put one more run on the board in the eighth inning when Donnie Webb scored on a wild pitch.
The win went to starter Justin Walker (1-0) for Lynchburg (17-23, 46-64). Walker bounced back from giving up eight runs in an inning and 1/3 in his Hillcats debut on Wednesday night to throw five shutout innings and earn his first victory at the Advanced-A level. The loss went to starter Joey Mahalic (4-7) for Kinston (18-23, 54-57). The righty walked a career-high eight batters in three and 2/3 innings in the defeat. The Cats are now 9-7 in their last 16 road games, while they are 3-12 in their last 15 contests at home.
On Monday the eight-game road trip continues as the Hillcat head to Woodbridge, VA to take on the Potomac Nationals. Before the four-game series starts, the two teams will complete a suspended game from the previous series at City Stadium with the P-Nats in front 8-2 through two innings of action. That game will be resumed at 5:00 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium before a second seven-inning game will be played as well. You can catch all the live action on 105.5 FM KD Country.
