Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs had another comeback win, overcoming a three-run deficit for a 7-3 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Jacob Wilson and Moisés Sierra both had two RBIs for Syracuse, and the Chiefs bullpen combined to allow just one hit in four scoreless innings pitched.
Syracuse (56-72) trailed, 3-1, entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but stormed back with an explosive eighth frame. Victor Robles led off with a single. Matt Reynolds followed with a walk, putting runners at first and second base. Wilson then singled to left field, scoring Robles to cut the Lehigh Valley lead to one, 3-2. José Marmolejos followed with a walk to load the bases. Sierra put Syracuse in front with a double to the right-center-field wall, bringing home both Reynolds and Wilson to give the Chiefs a 4-3 advantage. Pedro Severino then grounded a ball to Lehigh Valley shortstop J.P. Crawford, who fielded the ball but made an errant throw to first, allowing Marmolejos and Sierra to score and extend Syracuse's lead to three, 6-3. Severino moved to second base on the play. Two batters later, Bengie Gonzalez singled, placing runners at the corners. Yadiel Hernandez then worked a walk to load the bases. Robles followed with a strikeout, but strike three was a wild pitch, that allowed Severino to score from third and lengthen the Chiefs lead to four, 7-3.
Lehigh Valley (76-52) scored all of its runs in the top of second inning against Syracuse starting pitcher Austin Voth. Joey Meneses led off with a double. Dylan Cozens then moved Meneses to third base with a groundout to second. Trevor Plouffe followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Meneses for a 1-0 IronPigs lead. Collin Cowgill continued the inning with a single. Logan Moore followed with a two-run home run to right-center field that put Lehigh Valley up 3-0.
The Chiefs first got on the board in the third inning. With one out, Robles singled. Two batters later, after Robles stole second base, Wilson doubled to left field, scoring Robles to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Syracuse and Lehigh Valley conclude their three-game series on Thursday as the Chiefs become the Salt Potatoes. RHP David Goforth will start for the Salt Potatoes, opposite RHP Enyel De Los Santos for the IronPigs.
