Gwinnett Stripers News Release
DURHAM, NC - For the second straight night, the Gwinnett Stripers split a doubleheader with the Durham Bulls, losing 5-0 in game one and winning 8-2 as the home team in game two at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Game one saw the Stripers shut out on just one hit, a two-out double by Xavier Avery in the second inning. Only one other Gwinnett batter reached base as Danny Santana took first on an error to lead off the seventh, but he was erased on a double play.
Right-hander Jose Mujica (W, 5-1), making his first start for the Bulls since May 5, pitched 5.0 one-hit frames, walked none and struck out two. Righty Andrew Kittredge struck out two over 2.0 hitless frames, finishing the one-hitter.
Left-hander Kolby Allard, making his first start for the Stripers since July 22, scattered three hits and a walk over 3.0 scoreless innings and struck out two. He exited after 58 pitches and was replaced by right-hander Chase Whitley. After tossing a perfect fourth, Whitley unraveled in the fifth.
With the bases loaded and one out, Rob Refsnyder singled to drive in a pair and give Durham a 2-0 lead. Austin Meadows followed with an RBI double, and Brandon Snyder lined a sacrifice fly to a diving Avery in right field. Nate Lowe's RBI single capped the scoring at 5-0.
Whitley (L, 0-1) was tagged for five runs on five hits over 2.0 innings. Lefty Phil Pfeifer walked one and struck out one in a scoreless sixth.
Stifled in the opener, Gwinnett busted out early in game two with seven runs over the first two innings against Bulls right-hander Zach Lee.
Luis Marte opened the game with a first-pitch double to left and took third on a single by Santana. Austin Riley hit a grounder that caromed off the third-base bag for a double scoring Marte. Rio Ruiz followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead, and two batters later an error on third baseman Snyder allowed Riley to score. Phil Gosselin closed the four-run first inning with an RBI single.
In the second, Ruiz doubled off the wall in left-center to score Riley, and Dustin Peterson crushed a two-run home run (11) to left, raising the advantage to 7-0.
Lee (L, 3-5) was out after 2.0 innings with seven runs - six earned - on seven hits. Meanwhile, left-hander Luiz Gohara was locked in for the Stripers.
Gohara (W, 3-4) held Durham to a walk and three singles over 5.0 scoreless innings before giving up a pair of runs on a Lowe double in the sixth. He'd exit after 5.2 innings with two runs on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
Marte added an RBI double scoring Sal Giardina for an 8-2 lead in the sixth. Miguel Socolovich retired all four batters he faced, striking out two over 1.1 innings to finish the game.
Marte went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI in game two. Santana also went 2-for-4, scoring a run. Ruiz and Peterson each went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Riley went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
