Norfolk Splits Doubleheader with Charlotte
August 22, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
The Tides split a late-night doubleheader with Charlotte Tuesday night, taking game one 15-3 before falling in the nightcap, 3-2.
In the opener, the Tides used a 10-run inning and pounded out 17 hits to roll past Charlotte 15-3.
The contest was the completion of a suspended game from August 1st in Charlotte, a game in which the Tides led 3-0 when the game was delayed due to rain in the bottom of the third inning. When the game was resumed (after a three hour and 41 minute delay Tuesday night), the Knights pulled within 3-2 with single runs in the fourth and fifth frames before Norfolk erupted to take control.
The first 11 Norfolk batters of the sixth inning reached safely, as the Tides registered 10 runs on nine hits while sending 14 batters to the plate. Breyvic Valera - who scored twice in the inning - opened the inning with a walk before the next eight batters all recorded singles. By the time the inning ended, Norfolk held a 13-2 advantage. The 10 runs scored were the most scored by Norfolk in a game this season and were just one run shy of matching the highest single-inning total in franchise history - an 11-run outburst during the 2014 campaign.
Mike Yastrzemski - who ranks second in the IL with six triples this season - registered a season-high four hits in the game and fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Garabez Rosa added a homer and three RBI as part of a three-hit contest, while Ruben Tejada added three hits and an RBI. Every Tides batter scored a run in the game.
John Means (6-4) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion, as he allowed three runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of relief. He scattered nine hits and one walk while striking out seven in his first official relief outing at the Triple-A level.
In the nightcap, the Knights used two early homers and held off of a late Norfolk rally in a 3-2 win.
Norfolk starter Matt Wotherspoon (2-8) took the loss after yielding two runs on four hits over four innings. He struck out six and walked four, but surrendered solo home runs to Ryan Cordell and Eddy Alvarez in the second inning.
Drew Dosch and Jaycob Brugman each had RBI singles for the Tides, while Yastrzemski added two hits and a run scored.
Game two of the doubleheader began at 11:35 pm and ended at 1:56 am.
The Tides and Knights are set to square off in another doubleheader on Wednesday at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 5:05. Luis Ortiz (2-0, 2.81) is set to start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Spencer Adams (3-5, 3.20).
Notes: Prior to Tuesday's doubleheader, Michael Cuddyer, Clint Hurdle, Billy Swoope and Mike Cubbage were inducted into the Tidewater Baseball Shrine on the Harbor Park concourse... Because the opener of the doubleheader was the continuation of a game that began on August 1st, all stats from that game are recorded as having taken place on August 1st - not August 21st...Garabez Rosa walked in game two, his first walk since the All-Star break...Earlier Tuesday, the Orioles optioned infielder Steve Wilkerson to Norfolk.
