Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MO - Dylan Carlson's two-out base hit down the right-field line in the ninth inning Sunday night sent the Cardinals to a 6-5 walk-off victory before 5,023 fans at Hammons Field.
After riding into town on a three-game win streak, the Hooks have dropped the first two in this series.
Springfield surged out of the gate against Chad Donato, belting a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning. Yariel Gonzalez, who went deep in the first along with Justin Toerner, belted another homer in the fifth to stake the home club to a 5-1 lead.
Corpus Christi recorded their first two runs on long balls by Colton Shaver and Seth Beer.
The Hooks made it a two-run contest in the seventh when Stephen Wrenn cracked a two-out single into right-center, scoring Osvaldo Duarte. Roel Ramirez struck out Lorenzo Quintana to begin the eighth but Quintana was able to reach base as the third strike eluded Brian O'Keefe and sailed to the backstop. One out later, Shaver lined to left-center and Quintana went first to third allowing Shaver to move into scoring position on the centerfielder Carlson's throw to third base. Connor Jones entered from the pen to face Chuckie Robinson, who stroked an 0-1 pitch down the right-field line for a two-run double to tie the game at 5.
Willy Collado was excellent in relief, dispatching nine of the first 10 men he faced.
Collado ran into trouble in the ninth when Lars Nootbar reached to start the inning on a pop-up single against the shift. The Hooks got a forceout at second on a fine throw from the catcher Robinson on a sac bunt attempt by Rayder Ascaino. Irving Lopez was then struck by an 0-1 pitch, putting a pair on base. Collado struck out Zach Kirtley before being pulled in favor of Andre Scrubb. Carlson worked the count to 2-0 and then hit a sharp bouncer past a diving Beer at first base to win the game.
Corpus Christi looks to right the ship Monday night with J.B. Bukauskas on the hill. Tommy Parsons is slated to pitch for Springfield. First pitch 6:30.
