Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- May 26, 2016)- The West Virginia Power dropped game one of a three game series to the Columbia Fireflies as they started a seven game homestand at Appalachian Power Park Thursday night. Ke'Bryan Hayes' fifth home run of the year was not enough in the first ever matchup between the two clubs.
The Fireflies had a 3-0 lead three batters into the ballgame on three consecutive hits against Power starter Mitch Keller, capped by a two run home run from JC Rodriguez. That was already a season high in runs allowed for Keller who had not surrendered more than two in his first eight starts of the season.
Columbia scored another in the third inning on a run scoring groundout to make it 4-0 Fireflies.
Keller settled in after that, only allowing one base runner after the third on an error and retiring the last eight Firefly hitters. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native allowed four runs and five hits across six innings while striking out seven.
West Virginia got on the board in the third. After back-to-back singles by Christian Kelley and Logan Ratledge, Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a line drive single to left center to plate the first Power run of the game.
Hayes added another in the seventh, launching a pich over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the year, cutting the lead to 4-2. The 19-year-old is now tied for the team lead in home runs with Tito Polo and Daniel Arribas.
That was all the Power could muster against Badamo (2-3), who allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings.
West Virginia had the tying run at the plate in both the sixth and seventh, however they were unable to even the score. Alex Palsha threw a 1-2-3 ninth to close the 4-2 win for Columbia.
The teams will play game two of the four game set Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power with postgame fireworks after the game.
