Columbia Fireflies News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Bryce Beeler joined the Fireflies on Monday, and just four days later the right-hander tossed 6.1 shutout innings leading Columbia to a 2-0 win over West Virginia at Appalachian Power Park. In his first professional start, Beeler picked up the victory and struck out five Power hitters in the process. Friday's win is just the third shutout win of the season and Columbia's first since April 20.
Beeler appeared in two games for the Brooklyn Cyclones (short-season A) in June - both scoreless relief outings. His 2016 shutout streak is up to 13.1 consecutive innings to start the year. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native did a superb job of getting ahead in the count against West Virginia batters.
Behind him, Tyler Bashlor and Alex Palsha (S, 13) helped preserve the shutout. Palsha is now 13-for-13 in save opportunities this season and Bashlor's consecutive scoreless inning streak has reached 10 frames.
J.C. Rodriguez was responsible for both Columbia (3-6, 39-40) runs on Friday. He singled, stole a base and scored a run off of West Virginia (5-4, 40-38) starter Gage Hinsz (L, 1-3) in the first inning and did the same in the third. David Thompson knocked Rodriguez home with a single in that frame. Thompson still leads the South Atlantic League with 58 RBIs and has driven in at least one run in four straight games.
Dash Winningham also finished with a multi-hit night, his second of the road trip.
With the win on Friday, the Fireflies have evened up the series and are back at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday to face the Power at 7:05 p.m. Manager Jose Leger hands the ball to right-hander Gaby Almonte (1-1, 2.70). He faces South Atlantic League All-Star Mitch Keller (5-5, 2.71).
