Columbia Fireflies News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Columbia hurlers fanned 12 batters in a 6-0 loss to Augusta on Friday night at SRP Park. Joe Cavallaro and Jake Simon combined for 10 of these 12 strikeouts. The Fireflies' staff leads the South Atlantic League with 235 strikeouts.
Cavallaro made his fourth start for the Fireflies (12-10) this season. The righty tossed five innings and registered six strikeouts. The Floridian has lasted six frames or more in all of his four outings.
Simon piggybacked Cavallaro on the hill and lasted 2.1 innings. The southpaw retired the first seven batters he faced before he absorbed four runs in the eighth. Darwin Ramos was the second reliever out of the bullpen and extinguished the eighth-inning flame. Ramos struck out the final two batters in the stanza and stranded the bases loaded.
The GreenJackets (15-6) broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning. Ryan Kirby was hit by pitch with two outs. Moments later, Orlando Garcia smashed an RBI double and scored Kirby. The home team added to its lead in the fifth frame - Jeffry Parra launched a solo home run. Augusta led 2-0 after five innings.
Jeremy Vasquez continues to shatter the record books at the plate. The 21-year-old extended his on-base streak to a franchise record 21 games.
Game two of this series is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at SRP Park in North Augusta, South Carolina. 2016 Mets first-round pick Anthony Kay (1-0, 1.69) makes his fourth start of the season for Columbia. Righty Jason Bahr (1-1, 0.96) toes the rubber for Augusta. You can listen to the game on FOX Sports Radio 1400 AM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 5:45 p.m.
