Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive ended their 13-game losing streak in a big way on Friday night at Fluor Field, as Lorenzo Cedrola's walkoff single capped a three-run ninth inning in a 5-4 victory over the Charleston RIverDogs.
The Drive (4-18) entered the bottom of the ninth down by two before Pedro Castellanos reached on a single. Victor Acosta then reached on a fielder's choice, and an error put them both in scoring position with nobody out.
Isaias Lucena drove home the first run of the inning with a bloop single down the left-field line to trim the RiverDogs lead to one. Two batters later, a single from Ricardo Cubillan tied the game, and Cedrola smacked a single off the wall in left-center to finish the comeback.
Seven of the nine Drive starters recorded hits in the game, but the work of the bullpen was crucial in the Drive snapping their losing skid. Three innings of one-hit relief from Marcos Lantigua and a scoreless ninth by Juan Florentino (1-0) stopped the RiverDogs (10-12) in their tracks.
After Charleston scored four times in the second inning, Drive starter Alex Scherff settled in, as he allowed just one hit over the next three innings.
Meanwhile, Greenville slowly made it a close game in the third and the fourth innings. Cubillan's single and Cedrola's triple down the right field line put the Drive on the board in the third. Cedrola now has four hits and three RBIs in his two games since joining Greenville on Thursday, while Cubillan went 2-4 in his first start.
Acosta kept his hot streak alive with a home run over the Green Monster in the fourth that slashed the Charleston lead to 4-2. He has now recorded at least one hit in 11 of his 12 games since getting activated from the disabled list on April 16th, including four multi-hit games.
The Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx continues on Saturday night at 7:05 PM at Fluor Field. Greenville sends out left-hander Jhonathan Diaz (1-2, 4.57) to the mound as they go for a victory of the three-game series, and Charleston will start right-hander Garrett Whitlock (1-1, 1.64 ERA).
