RiverDogs Ambushed in Ninth in Walk-Off Loss to Drive

GREENVILLE, S.C. - After a pair of walk-off wins in their last four games, the Charleston RiverDogs got a taste of their own medicine on Friday night in the upstate. Leading by two headed to the bottom of the ninth, the RiverDogs were ambushed by a three-run rally as the Greenville Drive came back to win, 5-4, and snap their league-worst 13-game losing streak on Friday evening at Fluor Field.

The Drive (4-18) had not tasted victory in nearly two weeks as they rallied for three runs to hand the RiverDogs (10-12) their first loss when taking a lead into the ninth inning this year.

After first baseman Pedro Castellanos dropped a leadoff single in front of right fielder Steven Sensley to start the ninth, a hard chopper down the third base line from right fielder Victor Acosta was thrown away into right by Chris Hess trying to cut down the lead runner. On the same play, Sensley booted the ball in right field to allow Acosta to take an extra base. The two-error setback set up a chance with runners at second and third and nobody out. Greg Weissert (0-2), who returned to the mound to pitch the ninth, struck out Kervin Suarez before Charleston tried to set up the potential game-ending double play with an intentional walk to Marino Campana. Catcher Isias Lucena made it a one-run game with a floater down the left field line for an RBI single. Shortstop Ricardo Cubillan dumped a base hit into right to tie it and left fielder Lorenzo Cedrola drilled the walk-off hit off the left-center wall to end it.

The RiverDogs took an early lead with their biggest offensive inning of the year, scoring four in the second. Catcher Eduardo Navas and centerfielder Ricardo Ferreira ripped back-to-back two out, RBI singles before Wilkerman Garcia drilled an 0-2 fastball to right-center for a double that made it a four-run frame.

Greenville chipped away at the lead with runs in the third and fourth. Cedrola poked an RBI triple down the right field line after Cubillan reached on an infield hit. In the fourth, Acosta deposited an 0-2 pitch over the mini monster in left for a one out, solo homer, making it 4-2.

Charleston starter Daniel Ramos pitched well with only a pair of runs allowed. The Dominican righty went seven strong with three strikeouts before handing the ball off to Weissert in the eighth.

Red Sox No. 6 prospect Alex Scherff garnered a no-decision after yielding the four runs in five innings of work. Juan Florentino (1-0) was the benefactor of the ninth inning rally.

The RiverDogs will get a chance at revenge on Saturday night against the Drive. Charleston will send their Opening Night starter Garrett Whitlock (1-1, 1.64) in a matchup with Red Sox prospect and lefty Jhonathan Diaz (1-2, 4.57).
