West Valley City, Utah - The Colorado Eagles (13-8-0-3) defeated the Utah Grizzlies (13-9-0-2) 5-4 in a shootout Wednesday night at Maverik Center in another wild affair between the two Mountain Division teams.
The game marked the fourth time this year that 5-4 has been the final in a shootout and the sixth time in seven games that the two teams have had a contest decided by a single goal. It also marked the fourth-straight game, where a team was unable to hold a lead in the final five minutes.
"We need everybody caring and not just hoping that we get two points," said Utah Head Coach Kevin Colley. "It's just one of those games, where it's a tough pill to swallow."
Colorado took a 1-0 lead 17 seconds into the contest before the Grizzlies came back with three-straight to finish the period and take a 3-1 first intermission lead as they outshot Colorado 17-8. Justin Dowling (4), Matt Reber (6) and Blair Yaworski (4) all scored for Utah in the frame.
The Eagles scored two second period goals to tie and take the game to a 3-3 score going down the stretch.
Utah made it 4-3 10:29 into the third period when Jeff LoVecchio (7) scored crashing the net off of a face-off won by Mitch Fadden. Tysen Dowzak also picked up an assist. The Eagles though once again tied the game up with a shorthanded goal with 2:54 left in regulation.
The Grizzlies outshot Colorado 5-3 in the five minute overtime and also clanged a post, generating four quality scoring chances, but they were unable to get a goal.
The Eagles took an early 2-0 shootout lead, before Utah tied it on Fadden and Dowling goals. Colorado walked away with two points by scoring sudden-death in round five.
