No comeback was needed on Saturday night as the Alaska Aces rode a three-goal third period, and Gerald Coleman turned aside 31 shots for his ECHL-leading, third shutout of the year in a 5-0 victory over the Utah Grizzlies at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City. The Aces record improved to 9-4-1 on the year, and moved into sole possession of first place in the Mountain Division. They Aces swept the pair in Utah, to begin their eight-game road trip, and are now 6-1 on the road this season, with four of those wins coming via shutout. Alaska will now travel to the East Coast to continue their season-long road trip. They will visit Elmira on Wednesday and Friday, and Trenton on Saturday. The clubs played a scoreless opening period, and the Aces were outshot in the first for just the second time this season 14-8.
The Aces took the Grizzlies by storm in the second period, posting three goals to take control of the game. Scott Howes scored on a deflection at 3:16 to make it 1-0. Garry Nunn then scored on a breakaway at 5:39 to extend the lead. Wes Goldie moved into sole possession of 7th place on the ECHL goals list with his 296th on a power play at 14:12 to complete the big second period. Alaska outshot Utah 10-7 in the period and went into the third with a three-goal lead.
The Aces stamped the exclamation point on the third with another pair of goals. Chris Langkow scored a power play goal on a rebound at 4:10 of the third, and Goldie notched his second at 18:57 to complete the scoring and the Aces 5-0 win.
Gerald Coleman (6-3-1) made 31 saves on 31 shots, earning the win. J.P. Lamoureux (2-2-1) took the loss, with 24 saves on 29 shots. The Aces power play went 2-5, while the Grizzlies went 0-4. The Aces were outshot by the Grizzlies 31-29 in the game.
