Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are ecstatic to announce that forward Cody Sylvester has been named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Jan. 20-26.
Sylvester, 21, becomes the second member of the 2013-14 Nailers to earn ECHL Player of the Week honors, joining Zack Torquato, who posted a seven-point week at the end of November. Last week, Cody found the scoresheet in three of Wheeling's four contests, racking up five goals, one assist, six points, and a +6 rating. Three of his five tallies were game winners, as the Nailers won 2-0 at Gwinnett on Monday, 4-1 at Toledo on Friday, and 3-1 against Cincinnati on Sunday.
Despite playing in 22 of the team's 41 games due to time spent in the AHL, Cody leads three statistical categories for the Nailers. His 11 goals are two better than Max MacKay and Zack Torquato, his five game winning goals are one better than Mike Ratchuk, and his two shorthanded goals are one better four different players. Between Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Sylvester has appeared in 39 games during his rookie campaign, totaling 13 goals, three assists, and 16 points.
On behalf of Cody Sylvester, a case of pucks will be donated to the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 29,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
Sylvester and the Nailers will be back in action on Wednesday night at 7:00, when they play the second game of their four-game homestand, taking on the Fort Wayne Komets.
