Salt Lake City Stars News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - The Salt Lake City Stars could not hang on to a fourth-quarter lead as they fell to the Agua Caliente Clippers 116-108 on Wednesday afternoon at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Clippers (5-3) were led by two-way player Jay Scrubb with 36 points and six rebounds while shooting 15-30 from the floor and 6-10 from deep.
Jazz assignment player Jared Butler paced the Stars with 26 points and nine assists while fellow assignment player Elijah Hughes added 18 points for the Stars (1-7).
Butler made his presence felt right out of the gate with 14 points in the first quarter on 4-7 shooting from the floor.
Despite the Clippers red-hot shooting to start the game (12-19 FG), the Stars took a 37-30 lead into the second frame.
While both teams struggled from the floor in the second, the Clippers were led by Shevon Thompson who scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds in the period.
Jazz two-way player Malik Fitts added six of his 15 points as the Stars led 56-54 at the break, their first halftime lead of the young season.
The Stars opened the second half on a 7-2 run, but the Clippers held steady behind 11 points from Scrubb as Agua Caliente took their first lead of the game late in the third quarter and led 83-81 heading into the fourth.
Both teams traded blows in a fourth quarter that saw four lead changes and six ties. Scrubb scored 14 points in the quarter, including 11 in the final 1:27 to help the Clippers close out the Stars.
The Stars will head back home to host the South Bay Lakers on Dec. 6 and Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Bruin Arena at Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville. Tickets for both games against South Bay can be purchased at www.slcstars.com or by phone (via call or text) at (801) 325-STAR (7827).
