COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Indianapolis Indians offense amassed 13 hits, but they stranded 16 runners on base as the Columbus Clippers held off the Tribe on Friday night, 5-4. All but two of the Tribe batters collected at least one hit, but just one of the Tribe's 13 knocks came with a runner in scoring position.
Indianapolis (35-30) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Jordan Luplow drew a two-out walk and raced home when Jose Osuna doubled into left-center field.
Columbus (33-32) responded with a four-run frame in the bottom of the first. Drew Maggi and Yu Chang began the frame with infield singles. Yandy Diaz then drove Maggi home with a single to center field. With two one and nobody out, Brandon Barnes clubbed a three-run homer to push the Clippers to a 4-1 lead.
Ryan Lavarnway continued his power streak and brought the Tribe to within one in the second. Max Moroff sliced a one-out single and Lavarnway followed with a mammoth home run to right-center field. It was Lavarnway's third home run in just his last seven games.
The Indians tied the game in the top of the fourth, as Adam Frazier doubled home Lavarnway. That tie did not last long as Nellie Rodriguez singled home Eric Haase in the bottom of the fourth. Despite the high-scoring start, it would prove to be the game's final run.
Columbus was able to escape bases-loaded jams in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. The Indians had two men aboard when the game ended.
Indy continues the brief road trip on Saturday night, first pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. The Indians return to Victory Field on Tuesday night to open a six-game homestand.
