Toledo Mud Hens News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - The first place Toledo Mud Hens hosted the Louisville Bats at Fifth Third Field on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd. The opening game of the three game series went to the Bats by a score of 5-2.

Louisville's (24-39) starter Jose Lopez worked seven shutout innings. He was only able to muster two strikeouts, but he allowed only four hits. The Toledo (39-26) offense hit the ball hard, but hit it right at the opposition. Once again, the Hen Pen had a very strong showing, and Dawel Lugo secured a multi-hit game.

The Bats struck first after Nick Senzel opened the game with a double in the first inning off of Josh Turley. He was later driven in by a single from Gabriel Guerrero. The second run came in when D.J. Peterson doubled Guerrero home in that same inning.

Turley faced some trouble again in the third inning, as a passed ball allowed Dilson Herrera to score. The bases were loaded with one away when Phillip Ervin hit a sac fly to center. Turley lasted five innings, striking out two, walking five batters, and taking the loss after giving up four runs.

Paul Voelker looked strong out of the bullpen. He surrendered a hit to Senzel in his first inning of work, but proceeded to strand him on base. In his second inning, the seventh of the ballgame, he set the Bats down 1,2,3. That was the first time that happened in the game.

The eighth inning rolled around with The Hens still trailing by four. Zac Reininger was called upon to pitch. He sent Louisville down without any issues. His second inning did not go as well, as he allowed a run cross with only one out. But that was it as the next batter, Steve Selsky, hit into a double play.

Pete Kozma put the Hens offense in business with a leadoff base hit in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Gerber then flied out, giving Christin Stewart a shot. He lined the ball hard back to the mound, and Kozma was doubled off at first.

With one last shot, Lugo was tasked with leading things off. He knocked a single to get things started. Jim Adduci followed suit, giving the Mud Hens their first real threat of the day. A Mikie Mahtook strikeout and a Chad Huffman ground out put runners on second and third with two down. That is when Edwin Espinal nailed a two out single that drove in two runs, getting Toledo on the board. However, Kade Scivique then grounded out to end the game.
