Clippers Drop Series to Charlotte

June 21, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

After a nearly two-hour rain delay tonight at BB&T Ballpark the Columbus Clippers fell to the Charlotte Knights 6-4.

Columbus started the game on a high note, taking an early 3-0 advantage, but Charlotte found its way back to clinch the three-game series, having won the first two games.

The Clippers grabbed the lead in the first inning thanks to some shoddy Charlotte defense. With two men on, Francisco Mejia chopped a Michael Kopech pitch to the right side, where it hopped off second baseman Juan Perez's glove, allowing both runs to score.

Adam Rosales made it 3-0 in the second inning when he launched his sixth homerun of the year, a solo shot to left-center off Kopech.

The Knights rebounded with their first run against Columbus starter Michael Peoples in the home half of the second. Matt Skole poked his own solo homerun, his seventh this season, just over the left field wall to pull within 3-1.

Skole struck again with two Knights on in the bottom of the fourth. He stroked a two-run double off Peoples, tying the game at 3-3.

The Knights took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when Jacob May doubled off Peoples to score Leury Garcia, who had doubled in the at-bat before. The very next batter, Avisail Garcia, hammered a two-run homerun, extending the lead to 6-3 and ending Peoples' evening.

He went four and one-third innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out four.

Marc Rzepczynski relieved Peoples and finished off the fifth without allowing a run.

Adam Rosales did his best to bring the Clippers back in the top of the sixth when he provided a two-out RBI double to left, scoring Drew Maggi to pull his squad within 6-4.

That would be it for the Clippers, though, as the Knights would hold them scoreless for the remainder of the game, clinching the series with the 6-4 win.

The Clippers and Knights will finish off their series tomorrow night at BB&T Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:04 p.m.
