June 21, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs are proud to announce the Wall of Fame inductees for the 2018 season: Roy Halladay, Lew Carr, Tom Leo and Butch Alberts. The 2018 Wall of Fame induction ceremony will take place before the game on Sunday, July 22nd at 1:05 p.m. vs. the Louisville Bats.
"Wall of Fame Day is one of my favorite days of the year," said Jason Smorol, general manager. "Baseball in Syracuse has been around since the 1800s & it is our honor to pay tribute to those who have been a part of this great sport in the Central New York community."
Roy Halladay is an eight-time Major League All-Star and two-time Cy Young Award Winner who played with Syracuse SkyChiefs from 1997-98 and 2000-01. Halladay was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round in 1995 and played 12 seasons with Toronto before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies ahead of the 2010 season, where he spent the last 4 years of his career. On May 29, 2010 in Miami against the Florida Marlins, Halladay pitched the 20th perfect game in Major League Baseball history. Later that season, Halladay made his first postseason appearance on October 6, 2010. In that game, the first game of the National League Division Series, Halladay pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds. That was just the second no-hitter ever thrown in the postseason.
Lew Carr is a former Major League player who attended and played baseball at Syracuse University. After Carr's professional career was over, he returned to SU to coach the baseball team. Carr played shortstop and third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1901 alongside Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. That Pirates team won the National League Championship. Carr, a Union Springs, NY native, began coaching at his alma mater in 1910, coaching 543 games, including 275 wins before retiring in 1945. The school named its baseball diamond in Carr's honor in 1952.
Tom Leo was an official scorer with the Syracuse Chiefs and an active member of the Syracuse community. Leo began writing for The Herald Journal in 1984 and continued his writing career with The Post-Standard. Originally born in Syracuse, Leo coached baseball at Cicero Little League and North Syracuse Babe Ruth for many years. Leo also served on the Board of Directors for North Syracuse Babe Ruth and was a coach and athletic director for Sacred Heart CYO Basketball. Leo was a graduate of St. John the Baptist High School in Syracuse before receiving his bachelor's degree at St. Bonaventure University.
Butch Alberts played for the Syracuse Chiefs from 1978-80. The Williamsport, PA native played part of the 1978 season in the Major Leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays. Alberts, who now lives in Central New York, has coached various youth baseball teams in the area and is an instructor at local baseball clinics.
Wall of Fame Day, presented by Loretto, is part of the Chiefs' Season of Central New York theme for the 2018 season. To further honor Syracuse baseball history, the Chiefs will play as the Syracuse SkyChiefs and wear SkyChiefs jerseys and caps on the field that day. The Chiefs briefly changed their name to the SkyChiefs from 1997-2006, during which time Roy Halladay played for the team. SkyChiefs merchandise will be available for sale in the Whistlestop Souvenir Store, both in-stadium and online at syracusechiefs.milbstore.com. In addition, Syracuse SkyChiefs Roy Halladay bobbleheads will be given out to the first 1000 fans through the gates on July 22nd.
Wall of Fame Day is also Kids Eat Free Sunday, presented by NBT Bank. Kids 12 years and under will receive a voucher when they arrive at the game for a kids popcorn and 12 oz. fountain Coca-Cola drink in the 1st inning, a kids Hofmann hot dog and a 12 oz. fountain Coca-Cola drink in the 3rd inning, and a kids Perry's ice cream cup in the 6th inning. After the game, fans can run the bases, courtesy of East Syracuse Chevrolet.
To purchase tickets for Wall of Fame Day, or any other Syracuse Chiefs home game, fans can stop by the NBT Bank Stadium Ticket Office or call 315-474-7833 during normal office hours, or tickets can be purchased online anytime at syracusechiefs.com.
