Clint Malarchuk named assistant coach for Rampage
February 18, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO â Feb. 18, 2005 â San Antonio Rampage Director of Hockey Operations Matt Loughran announced today that Clint Malarchuk has been named assistant coach for the American Hockey League (AHL) club for the remainder of the 2004-05 season. Malarchuk, who serves as the goaltending coach for the Panthers, will be behind the bench with Head Coach Steve Ludzik when the Rampage travel to Utah to play the Grizzlies tonight.
Malarchuk takes over for Florida Panthers Assistant Coach Guy Charron who was reassigned by the Panthers to other hockey duties in South Florida on January 16. Since that time, Panthers' Director of Player Development, Duane Sutter, and Panthers' Director of Hockey Operations, Jack Birch, have spent time evaluating the team while serving as interim Assistant Coaches. Both Sutter and Birch will return to their respective duties with the Panthers.
"The Florida Panthers organization determined at the beginning of the season that if the NHL lockout was prolonged, the Panthers would give several key members of their organization the opportunity to evaluate Florida's players in San Antonio," said Loughran. "The progress and evaluation of the Panthers prospects in San Antonio is a high priority for Florida as the organization's players develop and prepare for a career in the NHL."
Malarchuk's playing experience includes 10 seasons in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres, as well as five seasons in the International Hockey League and 145 games in the American Hockey League.
Following his retirement as a player, Malarchuk spent three seasons as an assistant general manager with Las Vegas (IHL) before being named the team's head coach for the 1997-98 season. He then spent two seasons as the head coach of the Idaho Steelheads (WCHL) from 1998-2000. Malarchuk spent 2000-01 as the goaltending coach for both the Steelheads and the Prince George Cougars (WHL).
All Rampage regular season games can be heard on the Rampage's flagship station "The Ticket" 760 AM (subject to conflicts). Ticket packages for the Rampage's 2004-05 season are available. For ticket information, please call (210) 444-5050 or visit www.sarampage.com.
