Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to recognize Head Equipment Manager Clayton Johns, who was today named to the staff for Team Canada at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, set for July 31 - Aug. 5, 2023 in Trencin, Slovakia and Breclav, Czechia
Johns began his tenure with Portland prior to the 2021-22 campaign, joining the organization from the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Johns had served as their head equipment manager from 2017-20 while occasionally assisting the Toronto Maple Leafs' equipment staff as well. During the 2022-23 campaign, Johns earned his first national team experience when he was named to the equipment staff for Hockey Canada at their U-17 evaluation camp last fall.
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup originated in 1991 and is contested annually in mid-August between U-18 national teams from around the world. Canada took home the gold last season, with Sweden winning silver and Finland earning bronze, and leads all countries with 27 total medals in the competition.
Congratulations Clayton, and best of luck!
