Classy Cody Reed Flirts with Perfection in Hops' Win

July 18, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release

EUGENE, ORE. --- As far as wins go, this was a big 'un.

Nineteen-year-old Hillsboro southpaw Cody Reed --- at 6'3" tall and 245 lbs., his nickname is "Big 'Un" --- took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh inning at P.K. Park in Eugene. Though he didn't get it, Hillsboro did get a 2-0 win --- the team's fourth shutout in their last six games. And it was a huge win in the pennant race.

The victory, coupled with Salem-Keizer's 9-5, 10-inning loss at home to Boise, means the Hops are alone in first place for the first time since June 27th. Hillsboro (17-12) is one game up on Salem-Keizer (16-13) and two up on Eugene (15-14) with nine games remaining in the first-half race.

Reed retired the first 20 Emeralds to face him, but Eugene's Ian Happ broke it up with a two-out double in the seventh --- and with Hillsboro leading just 1-0, Happ represented the tying run. But Reed struck out Eloy Jimenez to end the inning, the final batter Reed faced. After the inning, Reed displayed incredible sportsmanship. As Happ stood near second base awaiting delivery of his cap and glove from the dugout, Reed walked over the man who broke up his perfect game and shook his hand.

Reed's final line: seven innings, one hit, no runs, no walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches, 63 for strikes. Over his last three starts, with added pennant pressure each time, Reed has thrown 19 consecutive shutout frames. He is now 4-1 with a 1.31 ERA.

The Hops got on the board in the first inning against Eugene starter Preston Morrison, stringing together three two-out singles for a run. Zach Nehrir dunked a base hit into right, Trevor Mitsui lined a single to left, and Josh Anderson smoked another base hit to left to score Mitsui.

Emeralds reliever Grefer Eregua thoroughly shut down the Hops over his five innings of relief, but the Hops added the run in the seventh against Trey Masek on Mitsui's RBI single.

Taylor Clarke came out of the Hops 'pen in the bottom of the eighth. Eugene put two on with two out, but Clarke got out of the jam by inducing pinch-hitter Blake Headley to ground out. Happ had a two-out single in the ninth, bringing up the cleanup hitter, Jimenez, representing the tying run. Jimenez hit one to the track in left, but Gerard Hernandez ran it down for the final out of the game.

It was Hillsboro's fourth shutout in their last six games --- a 9-0 whitewashing of Spokane on Saturday (in a game started by Reed), a 6-0 blanking of Spokane on Monday, and including last night's 4-0 win, back-to-back shutouts here in Eugene. (The Hops could have had a fifth shutout in their last six games, as they took a 4-0 lead into the ninth inning on Sunday at home against Spokane, but lost 6-5 in 11 innings.)

Hillsboro comes home on Saturday at 5:03 to face North Division-leading Everett, the Mariners' Northwest League affiliate. Andrew Moore, Seattle's second-round draft choice this year out of Oregon State, is scheduled to pitch for Everett. Carlos Hernandez will pitch for the Hops.

Saturday's radio pregame show begins at 4:35 on Rip City Radio 620AM and www.RipCityRadio.com.
