NWL1 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes

Hawks Power Way to Series Victory

July 18, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

The Volcanoes fell 9-5 in 10 innings to the Boise Hawks Friday night in front of a season-high 4,536 fans at Volcanoes Stadium.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Eric Toole singled off of reliever E.J. Encinosa (2-2, 4.05 ERA) to break the tie and put Boise ahead by two. The Hawks added two more insurance runs in the frame before Cristian Quintin (2-2, 3.00 ERA) tossed a scoreless tenth to secure the victory for Boise. Quintin redeemed himself after allowing Salem-Keizer to walk off in the first game of the series.

Salem-Keizer carried a 4-3 lead into the eighth but Kevin Padlo tied the game with one swing of the bat, belting a solo home run off reliever Ryan Halstead. Scott Burcham put the Hawks out in front in similar fashion the following frame, hitting a solo homer to left off of Halstead. It was Burcham's second big fly of the night.

The Volcanoes refused to go quietly though as Steven Duggar led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Miguel Gomez then chopped a single into right, scoring Duggar and tying the game. The Volcanoes never advanced a runner beyond first base the remainder of the contest, however, dropping their second straight.

It was a back-and-forth game all night consisting of four lead changes and four ties. Neither team possessed more than a one-run advantage until Boise's four-run explosion in the 10th.

Volcanoes starter Drew Leenhouts pitched well once again but was burned by the long ball in his final inning of work, allowing a game-tying, two-run homer to Burcham in the fifth. He allowed three runs on four hits in five innings.

Salem-Keizer took an emphatic lead the following half inning when Julio Pena outlasted reliever Ryan McCormick in a 14-pitch at bat and ripped a two-out, two-run double into left. Pena fouled off 11 pitches in the at bat before driving in his 14th run of the season to put the Volcanoes up 4-3.

That score held until Boise took the lead in the eighth on Burcham's homer. Salem-Keizer tied things up in the ninth, but Toole put the Hawks in front for good in the tenth. It was only the fourth time this season the Volcanoes lost a game in which they led after the seventh inning.

Player of the Game: Julio Pena went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. His two-run double in the fifth - after a 14-pitch at bat - was the highlight of the night for Salem-Keizer.

Up Next: The Volcanoes begin a three-game series with the Tri-City Dust Devils Friday night. Mike Connolly (1-1, 4.33 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. The broadcast will be available on volcanoesbaseball.com or through the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
