Clinton LumberKings News Release
South Bend, IN - Speedy shortstop Pedro Ciriaco was a general thorn in the side of the Clinton LumberKings Friday morning, going 4-for-4 and accounting for all four runs in South Bend's 4-3 victory. Ciriaco doubled home the tying run off L-Kings reliever Juan Carlos Garcia in the sixth, then advanced to third and stole home against lefthander Julian Cordero to put the Silver Hawks on top for good.
The LumberKings (7-15) scored three runs in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Freddie Thon continued his hot streak at the plate with a leadoff double. An error by Silver Hawks second baseman Manuel Ferrer on a ball hit by L-Kings catcher Ben Crabtree allowed Thon to score. With Truan Mehl and Crabtree both on base, shortstop Matt Smith lined a two-out single to center, clearing the bases. However, those three runs would be the only runs of the day for Clinton.
Silver Hawks starter Anthony Cupps entered the game with a 13.50 ERA, but worked a solid game against the L-Kings. Cupps (1-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits. He lowered his ERA to 9.97 in getting his first victory of the year.
LumberKings starter Kyle Rogers pitched just three innings, allowing only two runs on two hits and walking five batters in a no-decision. Juan Carlos Garcia (0-2) picked up the loss in relief.
The leading hitter of the day for the LumberKings was rightfielder Terry Blunt. Blunt went 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of doubles.
The loss earned the LumberKings a 2-2 series split with the Silver Hawks. The 12-game road trip continues Saturday for the L-Kings as they travel to Kane County to take on the Midwest League West-leading Cougars. Game one features lefthander Zach Phillips (1-0, 1.19 ERA) looking to be the first starter with two wins this year. Game time set for 4:00pm central time.
