Jake McGee Sensational Against Bees

April 28, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays got even with the Burlington Bees Friday night with a 3-1 victory. The Rays split the first series of the year with the Bees, 2-2. Jake McGee got the start and pitched the best game of the year for the D-Rays before leaving to a standing ovation.

McGee was two outs away from a complete game. Over 8 1/3 innings, Jake struck out ten Bees while walking only three and allowing two hits. He was charged with one run because of a walk that he surrendered in the ninth inning before Greg Dupas came in to get the save. The only hits that the Bees recorded off McGee were a blooper over the first baseman by Miguel Vega and a liner through the hole at second base by Jeremy Jirschele.

The Bees had some problems with their pitching, as starter Ryan Di Pietro left the game after 1/3 inning because of a right knee injury. Di Pietro was charged with two earned runs when his batters on base were driven in later in the first frame. Raynor Oliveros came in to finish off the first and continued for 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and one run to the Devil Rays.

The one tally that Oliveros gave up was a home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning by shortstop Neil Walton. The homer was Walton's first since July 28th, 2005. Walton went 2-4 on the night with two runs scored.

Hunter Vick had his best night at the plate as a Southwest Michigan Devil Ray by going 2-3. One of the hits by Vick was a double, which was his first extra base hit of the year. Garrett Groce continued to be trouble for Midwest League pitchers with a 2-4 night and one RBI. J.T. Hall had the other run batted in for the Rays when he hit a sac fly to left field in the first inning.

With the victory, the Rays improve to 10-12 on the season. They pick it up again on Saturday in Peoria to take on the Chiefs in a four-game series.
