Whitecaps complete best home stand
April 28, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Friday afternoon, the Whitecaps followed the pattern established Thursday night: Take a lead early and ride the pitching to a win. West Michigan went ahead 4-2 in the second inning and cruised to a 5-2 victory over Kane County.
With the triumph, the Whitecaps take three-of-four from the Western Division leading Cougars and finish a 7-1 home stand, which matches the best multi-opponent home stand in team history. West Michigan was 7-1 against South Bend and Burlington July 10-17, 2002.
Luke French threw six innings and allowed both Kane County runs with five hits to earn the win.
Andrew Kown threw two scoreless innings of relief, to extend his season-opening streak to 16 scoreless innings. Following the game, Kown was promoted to Lakeland of the Florida State League. He is 6.1 innings short of the team record for consecutive scoreless innings thrown by a reliever, which was set May 6-July 13, 2003 by Ian Ostland at 22.1 innings pitched.
Will Rhymes spear-headed the Whitecaps offense as he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
Mike Hollimon tied the game in the second inning with a home run down the right field line. It was Hollimon's second of the season and the first Whitecaps home run of the series.
A two-run single by Matt Joyce put the Whitecaps on top for good, 4-2.
Dusty Ryan scored on Joyce's single. Ryan singled to reach base and extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Joyce also picked up an RBI in the first inning on a ground out to second base.
Cameron Maybin delivered a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth inning, which drove in the final run of the game.
Orland Perdomo notched his eighth save in nine opportunities for West Michigan.
Jeff Baisley was 2-for-4 for Kane County with a run scored.
Maybin Watch: Tigers top draft pick (2005) Cameron Maybin was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly RBI.
Current Stats: .303 average; 5 2B; 4 3B; 1 HR; 15 RBI; 3 SB.
Thawed Tundra: Appleton, Wisconsin is the next destination for the Whitecaps. West Michigan will play a four game series against the Timber Rattlers.
