Swing drop finale, lose series

April 28, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities fell behind early and never recovered Friday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, losing the final game of the series, 11-6, to the Beloit Snappers. The Swing dropped three of four to Beloit, and have lost their last two series at John O'Donnell Stadium.

A five-run fifth inning broke the game open, as Quad Cities' (10-12) defensive woes continued. The Swing committed four more errors that allowed five more unearned runs to score, including four in the fifth. They have now yielded 28 unearned runs in 22 games this season.

The Swing were trailing 4-2 when reliever Trey Hearne took the mound to open up the top of the fifth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, and then Henry Sanchez hit a weak bouncer to short that turned into an RBI fielder's choice, as it was hit too softly for Jose Martinez and Casey Rowlett to turn two. With two outs Edward Ovalle followed with another bouncer to the shortstop, but the throw by Martinez was high, pulling Adam Rodgers off the bag at first and allowing the inning to continue. After Eli Tintor loaded the bases with a single, Allan de San Miguel capped the rally by turning on a 1-2 pitch, clearing the bases with a three-run double. Four of the five runs were scored with two outs, giving Beloit a commanding 9-2 lead.

Beloit jumped out in front early and never looked back. Steve Tolleson led off the game by ripping a double down the left field line, and scored one batter later when Tarrence Patterson singled into center. Patterson would eventually come home to score on Paul Kelly's sacrifice fly, giving the Snappers a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third the Swing gained some momentum with their defensive play. Tolleson was at third base with one out when Drew Thompson hit a liner to Matt Wilkerson in right field. As Tolleson tagged and came home, Wilkerson fired a one-hop strike to Brandon Yarbrough, who held onto the ball as the runner barreled into him to end the inning with an exciting play at the plate.

That put Quad Cities in position to tie the game with a rally in the bottom of the inning. Rodgers, who opened the season with five extra-base hits in his first six games, led off with a double, his first extra-base hit since that early hot stretch ended on April 11. Yarbrough's line-drive single to left put men on the corners, and Casey Rowlett followed by slapping an RBI double to right that dropped just inside the foul line. With men on second and third, Daniel Nelson's suicide squeeze brought home Rodgers to tie the game at two.

The tie was short-lived, however, as the Snappers would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth. After an error allowed the leadoff man to reach, Erik Lis slugged a home run to right for a 4-2 advantage. Lis was 4-for-4 on the night with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and a pair driven in.

Down 10-2 late in the game, the Swing tried to fight back. Rodgers tripled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, coming home to score on Yarbrough 's infield single. In the eighth, three consecutive singles by Colby Rasmus, Randy Roth, and A.J. Van Slyke opened the frame, as all three would come home in the inning to pull to within 10-6.

With their eighth inning singles, both Rasmus and Roth kept hit streaks alive. Rasmus has three home runs and nine RBI over his 10-game streak, while Roth has five longballs and four doubles in his last eight games.

Josh Wilson (0-1) took the loss for Quad Cities, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits in his Swing debut. The second round pick in 2005 fanned three without issuing a walk.

Brian Duensing (1-1) picked up the win for Beloit, as the Southpaw pitched into the eighth inning, striking out six without walking a batter. The former Nebraska Cornhusker allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.

UP NEXT: The Swing will open up a four-game set with the Lansing Lugnuts Saturday night, sending RHP Kyle Sadlowski (0-0, 4.63) to the mound against RHP Russ Savickas (1-0, 1.52). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:15.
